Have you tried it yet? How difficult is it to shred ready for rolling?

I looked on Ebay and they were some purpose made shredders from China but hellishly expensive.

A kitchen blender should do the job. Presumably, however, a duty point arises as soon as you flick the switch?

You can see shredding here http://www.tobaccoleaf4u.com/how-to-make-snuff/  The 'cut' is 0.8mm (same cut as commercial RYO) with the top machine http://pureleaf.co.uk/shredders/13-gabej-tobacco-shredder-08mm.html. The shredder is way overpriced by that company Pureleaf. You can get it from Poland for about £50.and it's well worth the money

If they visit anybody it will be the suppliers of leaf ... not the customers.

Re: We like this! Tobacco Leaf £1.50 for 50g!

A manual pasta machine that will do fetuccine (any twin roller/cutter one) is quite sufficient for your needs.  You may need to run it through twice if you RYO.  Rip the stem out before shredding.  Plenty of used ones on ebay for less than a tenner excl postage.

Get a snuff grinder and some organic herb/plant extract for blending your own snuff  just in case of said sledgehammer and only shred enough baccy for daily smoking need.  Always clear up after shredding.  If you experiment a bit with the snuff to get a blend that you like you'll probably find your smoking reduces as a consequence.  Snuff bullets are great for the pub etc especially now the colder weather's drawing in.

Most importantly.............You won't be inhaling all the shit and additives that are in manufactured cigs/baccy.  Pure baccy, unadulterated nicotine, more pleasant smoke, no nasty aftertaste.
Just like the proverbial BigMac,  it is the sugar etc in them that ensures you crave another and not the burger itself.  The same is true of tobacco products.  You'll still want a nicotine hit but that's all,  thus reducing consumption.

There are many lies all governments force onto us and the dangers and damage to health of smoking is top of the list.  Take away the additives and the dangers are miniscule.  It's not tar and nicotine that causes most cancer etc but the other shit.

Re: We like this! Tobacco Leaf £1.50 for 50g!

I have just gotten an order from these guys and the leaf is outstanding quality for the price.  There really is no need now to travel to foreign parts for your snuff.

Seriously people, grab a shredder or even just a pair of 'herb' scissors and put in an order. Your passport can go back in the drawer.

Sounds good!  But what we could do with is an idiot's guide on how to make your own HRT. I wouldn't have a clue what to do with tobaccp leaf, like how long to leave it to cure or do you add anything?

Re: We like this! Tobacco Leaf £1.50 for 50g!

Rather than go out and buy an expensive shredding machine - at least for the time being - I have found a way of shredding the leaf that is simple, cheap and fairly quick. All you need is a wooden surface to cut, on a couple of supermarket carrier bags and a cheap hobby knife of the sort that can be bought from any £ shop with several in a single package.

Remove the leaf from the central spine while leaving the side veins alone as they will keep the leaf intact for the next stage. Now roll the freed leaves into a fairly tight block or a very short & fat 'cigar'. Any small pieces can be rolled into the middle so as to save on the wastage. Extend the blade of the knife as far as practical bearing in mind that the more blade you expose, the more likely it will be for it to wobble off line! Holding the rolled package on the wood you can easily cut into strips of 2-3mm in width. As each such bundle is dealt with the rolls of strips can be simply swept into a carrier bag or similar for further treatment. When you have 'shredded' as much as you need for the moment you now grab a handful of the strips and transfer them to another carrier bag and vigorously rub/roll them between your hands until they all curl up. Repeat if necessary. By this time the baccy will be soft enough to use as HRT and/or more amenable to being further processed into snuff. Any left over should be immediately transferred into the smallest air-tight container that it will go into to avoid excessive loss of moisture.

Job done and cheap as chips http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/grin.png

Re: We like this! Tobacco Leaf £1.50 for 50g!

I'm sure I've read somewhere that HRT has to be in strips of less than 1mm wide to be classed as HRT and be dutiable.
Can somebody confirm or correct me ?

1.Tobacco products.

(1)In this Act “tobacco products” means any of the following products, namely,—

(a)cigarettes;

(b)cigars;

(c)hand-rolling tobacco;

(d)other smoking tobacco; and

(e)chewing tobacco,

which are manufactured wholly or partly from tobacco or any substance used as a substitute for tobacco, but does not include herbal smoking products.

(2)Subject to subsection (3) below, in this Act “hand-rolling tobacco” means tobacco—

(a)which is sold or advertised by the importer or manufacturer as suitable for making into cigarettes; or

[(aa)which is of a kind used for making into cigarettes; or]

(b)of which more than 25 per cent. by weight of the tobacco particles have a width of less than 1mm.

[(2A)For the purposes of subsection (2)(aa) above the use for making into cigarettes must amount to more than occasional use but need not amount to common use.]

Original 1979 Act said less than 0.6mm but 1n 1993 it was changed to 1mm

Re: We like this! Tobacco Leaf £1.50 for 50g!

So baccy that is cut in strips more than 1mm wide would be taxed the same as pipe tobacco at £96 per kilo rather than HRT at £172 per kilo (or thereabouts)

Yes and no, it's indeed why you can buy 'smoking tobacco' at about £10 for 50g at most supermarkets- the brand "Blue Ridge" springs to mind. It's shredded to just over 1mm and therefore sold as pipe tobacco.
http://www.rollingtobacco.it/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/blue_ridge_tabacco.jpg

However the act says

[(aa)which is of a kind used for making into cigarettes; or]

so if you intend using , say, 1.2mm shred to make cigs then it is subject to HR duty. I think Junican has looked into this in depth this last week on his blog.

Just had to post that. Seems TL4U are now sending out the virginia in traditional hands! WOW! That Hand I got today from them. Even The Bestes Frau In The Whole Wide World (a rabid non smoker) thinks it looks 'pretty in a Native American sorta way' hanging up in the kitchen to dry.

Re: We like this! Tobacco Leaf £1.50 for 50g!

Has anyone tried ordering some baccy from them lately. It seems that the 'order now' button just links you to an email form which is not answered very quickly. Has it all gone tits up?

Re: We like this! Tobacco Leaf £1.50 for 50g!

I'll just have to try again and see what happens.

Update: This time it worked and hopefully the baccy should be winging its way me-ward soon. At this price it could put a serious dent in the financial viability of some of the baccy outlets in Belgium or even farther afield.

My sincerest thanks to those (you know who you are) who sent me large samples of these products. I owe you a lot!
