Chaos!

No other way to describe it.

Miserable journey down to the tunnel thanks to M20 being closed. Added 90mins to our journey so late for the train. No directions as to what to do if you miss your train so stuck the boarding card on and followed the others. Nobody checked it so we were on the next one.

Went up to adinkerke. Lorries parked up for miles on the m/way waiting for ferries and traffic down to a crawl. Further on we encountered the same on our side waiting for Dunkirk port. It took us nearly 2hours to get from addy to the hotel at Coquelles.

If it's the same on the way back I'm camping out!

Re: Chaos!

Still major disruption this am. Difficult to find a route to the tunnel. Avoid if possible.

Sorry to see you had problems, eezy http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/sad.png

As you know, we've been taking car across Channel for 50 years and this is worst year we've seen

We stay in hotel at Ashford and, in July, got there using A20 from Maidstone and A20 from Ashford to Jn11 and last bit on M20 to Chunnel.

Chap at RealXL was saying about lorries stacked up but we didn't really see it that side.

Well we're just back!

Just to elaborate, Lorries to Calais port were stacked up on the eastbound side of the m/way and occasionally you'd find the odd one double parked. Vehicles were pulling out of the line at random so quite dangerous. Loads of migrants around, wandering around the trucks and sitting on the central reservation. Further up lorries were stackked on both sides of the m/way for Dunkirk port. Roads to the port as far as you could see were at a standstill.

This morning we were up in good time and went for a ramble around Auchan and to buy breakfast. Got some petrol there at 96pence per litre. Set the satnav to take us to the tunnel and the slip road to the m/way was closed off so I went in the other direction to find a slip road open. The satnav picked up a detour and took us all around the area and back to the same slip road. I got back on the m/way heading towards Dunkirk until I got to the end of the lorry stack and then got off the m/way and back on the other side. Again just one lane usable. This stack of lorries went right up to the tunnel. Got there 30 mins to spare and our train was cancelled so we left 30 mins late.

Got pulled at customs for a check. I was asked a lot of probing questions that I considered irrelevant, like do you have your hotel booking with you and yesterday's boarding card. Do you both work, how long have you owned the car, what is your relationship to each other....... Then asked what goods we had. At that point I insisted she make a notebook entry. She said I can do but with your frequency of travel and the goods you are carrying we are not going to be interested. I pointed out that if I was stopped again the notebook record would be proof of what I was carrying so reluctantly she agreed.

I am now going to sitback and enjoy the fruits of my labours so to speak. That is, before I start mending a burst pipe on the kitchen sink...dohhh.

We went down the M40, prefer it to the M1, but when we got to the M25 the satnav diverted us to the Dartford crossing and then through Maidstone town centre onto the A20. The volume of traffic was immense but made worse by a ''roadworks'' set of traffic lights around a piddling little van parked at the side of the road, which could easily have been moved onto the footpath. We rejoined the M20 further down after the closure.

When we passed through this morning the same stretch of m/way was closed again but fortunately we were travelling north so no problem for us.

No wonder the people in Kent are up in arms over lorry stacking, it must be horrendous to live with that.

Re: Chaos!

they certainly dont like making notebook entries the ukbf on the tunnel, when they asked to look in my car i insisted they make an entry first, the ukbf reluctantly did this but certainly wasn't happy about it,then once he had done it,just had a quick glance and didn't even count how many cases of wine i had, just took my word for it,but i doubt he bothered to note it down.

Well according to reports of how they are all falling out with each other in the jungle, I would imagine there's plenty of live bait around. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png

Re: Chaos!

And for the Hull crossing, Pride of Bruges has just left Zeebrugge heading into a forecast violent storm force 11 whilst the Pride of York is en route to Zeebrugge with an ETA of 1300hrs tomorrow. Not much time for shopping there then.

Re: Chaos!

According to the Daily Mail, long queues at Calais owing to Brussels introducing tough new border checks.  Delays of an hour + before boarding.

Re: Chaos!

Ah yes.....just remembered why I never use airports!

At least if it happens at Calais or Coquelles I will be sitting in my car, probably enjoying the contents of a picnic basket and watching TV  on mrs eezy's tablet.
