Bwexit

The liberal elite, sky news, bbc news and out of touch MPs have all worked tirelessly to get the worst possible deal for Britain leaving the EU and it would seem inevitable now that the right to shop in Europe for cigarettes and tobacco will end next March.
So what are shoppers planning?  One last mega shopping trip?  How do you think Border Force will deal with these final shopping trips?
Any thoughts?

Re: Bwexit

If they'd have made the decision to leave the EU 10 years ago we would possibly have things in place by now for an orderly and profitable exit. It simply is not possible to untangle 40 odd years of legislation and negotiate trade agreements in a few months.

Personally I won't bother stocking up. What's the point, the goods that you buy will only last you a limited time.

With the Brexit mess, the currency markets are looking for any scrap of info to force the pound down, and there seems to be plenty of it. Consequently there are not the bargains to be had now. Calais has been gearing up for duty free for 12 months but read the local press and see the number of high profile stores and hotels that are closing every week.

I can't see us going back to the days where smuggling was rife because the financial penalties if people get caught are too severe.

As regards BF it will be their swansong. Mind, if everybody did it and appealed, I doubt they could get every case before the courts in time. They struggle at present.

Re: Bwexit

I was discussing this a while back with someone from Trading Standards. The Black Market is massive in the UK and Brexit will only enhance it. Remember, what the Black Market is doing now is already illegal. Many sales come from the convenience stores run by legal immigrants and although some get raided there's no diminishing of sales. Some are very smart and do not have stock on the premises which, in effect, puts any chance of prosecution down to virtually zero.

Also, there are factories in UK making cigarettes and market them at around £3 a pack l'm told. Tobacco 50g packs are made too. Forget the scare stories about rat droppings etc etc, the factories make the cigarettes etc from the same leaf as the big manufacturers.

BF dont seem to do anything about except seize a shipment every now and then. Recently 22 tonnes of raw leaf tobacco was seized in Hull. Did they track where it was going? No, they just seized it. Duh??? The Black Market know they will lose shipments every now and then but these losses are taken into account when pricing their products.

To be honest, the governments (Con & Lab) have created this illegal industry and everything government does seems to be for the benefit of the Black Market. Its almost as though they are in partnership with them.

Re: Bwexit

If we see the return of Duty Free, we'll also see an increase of family members and friends bringing Duty Free cigs/tobacco for their smoking relatives/friends. Although technically illegal, people just don't see it that way. One wonders how BF will deal with this? Are they going to interview someone who has 200 Duty Free cigarettes???

Re: Bwexit

Actually, thinking about it, I'm not sure they can impose duty assessments on duty free goods, only what they call a civil penalty. I'm sure turbo posted that somewhere.

I kinow a lot of people who have been challenged with duty free, over the limit, but have been waved through after a wrist slap. Maybe because they can't collect duty?
