Members, Should we close this to members Only

I was just thinking on how valuable this forum is and has been helping me to get my chocolates home safe and intact.

The information and help I have received has been priceless, so therefore I became a member and paid my dues for the year £5.00.

So I was wondering what do members think about making this a closed forum only open to paid members.

Your thoughts gratefully received. Shoot me down if you want I have wide shoulders...

"SH" and other moderators feel free to delete this if I have gone overboard.

Garry

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

£5 is worth it just for some of the downloads available imo.

There are people dedicated to this forum who spend a lot of their time and money gathering this info,it would be good if everyone  would just donate a little to the forum without asking.

Firmly against it guys. SH's original idea I think was to "spread the gospel" to as many people as possible. If you make it members only it will be seen as cliquey.I have seen it destroy other forums.

By all means add a Donate facility

Agree wholeheartedly with the above. At one point I was co-admin of a another board and we set a private "green room" up for mods and the like to discuss certain items away from the general membership and the complaints and such we received ran into the hundreds. Even after explaining the reasoning behind the private forum, people started to leave in droves. Seems people are a little paranoid maybe ?

I've been lucky enough to meet SH personally and after talking to him I believe he would not agree with making the board a paid-only membership setup. As eezy says above, SH wants as many people to be "in the loop" as possible

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

No l don't want it 'members only'. However, l would like people to become members of N2D Social Club as it gives us more credibility and offers protection for the minibus against the highwaymen posing as Customs officers. If, god forbid, the bus gets seized ALL members of the club could be part of a group appeal. The bus already has it's own Blue Badge but more protection is always welcome. Membership funds also help in the maintenance of the bus and other costs ... it ain't cheap! Got to get 4 tyres on it shortly (perhaps Father Xmas will help)

l'd like to see at a glance who are members of N2D Social Club so if you are a member please copy and paste this into your signature http://i45.tinypic.com/24uxqug.png
(<<< Right click and then click on 'copy image url)

l'll have a think about the donate facility etc.

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

Making the forum " Members Only" would kill it as we want people to find the forum and post their experiences whether good or bad.

I've nothing against " hidden forums" as, imho, they are needed to effectively run a site. There has to be a place where moderators can have a private group discussion.

One site I'm a member of is an ISP support group and a lot of our work is under non-disclosure agreement so can't be in public. This fact is known and doesn't stop people visiting site and asking questions.

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

Maybe the forum could go down the road of the "Masonic Lodge" and not only could fees be paid on a monthly basis but the money could buy a goat that would be used to initiate new members to the society,
Members could have their own secret handshake when meeting on the P&O on the high seas.
And a black ball (No 8 pool Ball) used to eliminate any member not conforming to the general view of the majority, fines and pennance could be issued by the resident committee and a Lottery grant applied for.

Maybe form a golf club and a lady members section, even an Insurance against seizure section.
Well it's an idea.
And it would expell nosy parkers from the customs buzzing the boards and knowing the members intentions.

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

Great, new ideas coming, Ill resind the the "Closed forum Idea", It was stupid  But the donate button is a great idea.

How about pay £5.00 for the downloads and  membership is free for a year.

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

No I wouldn't want that to happen and even if I was in agreement I think you'd need a lot more members first. I'm a user of some other forums and they have VIP sections with fees ranging from $10 - $100 pa.

One thing I would suggest is moving the forum onto it's own domain and put adsense and other advertising on it. Can't say it'll make a fortune but it may pay for hosting costs at the very least.

Perhaps the forum could expand if other issues were introduced that were related and of interest??

I wouldn't say it was a stupid idea Garry, just that in my (and others) experience it can sometimes be counter-productive, especially to new members. I definitely agree with the donate button. The paypal one is pretty easy to set-up if I remember correctly. The only thing I don't like about it is that paypal charge a fee (I understand that is how they do business, so no moaning about that) which impacts the amount that the donatee receives. Now if it could be set-up to automatically process the donation as a gift, where the sender pays the fee, that is a different matter.

Btw SH, if £ is tight, you can put me down for one of the tyres for the bus.  (happy)

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

How about after every trip on the Puff Puff bus the passengers donate two to five pouches of hrt or a sleeve of fags into a central pool, Then if any member is unlucky enough to lose their purchase an agreed amount of baccy could be given to save them having to buy in Tesco until the next trip is arranged.
This could be replaced if the tobacco is restored or compensated. But replaced at Belguim prices.

Thats what I think.

Re: Members, Should we close this to members Only

I don't know how to donate or join the club

Now why didn't I think of that ? That is actually a bloody good idea George and if BF ever got wind of it and suggested we were doing it for "money's worth" it could easily be disputed because it is actually a gift.  (devious)
