How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

Border Force come up with figures that are complete pants and based on no scientific analysis whatsoever. However, the BS-ISO-15592-part 3 does have factual stats.

We'll concentrate on the minimum amount of cigarettes you can get from a 50g pouch as the maximum is of little interest to us.

Reference to the British Standard International Organisation of Standardization statistics in BS ISO  15592 – Part 3 : an internationally recognised standard which specifies that:-

i)   A 70 mm cigarette paper, with a 7.2 mm diameter consumes 750 mg (0.75g) of tobacco.

ii)   A 79 mm cigarette paper (termed Spanish), with a 7.2mm diameter consumes 879.8 mg (0.88g) of tobacco
.
iii)  A 100 mm paper (termed Kingsize), with a 7.2 mm diameter consumes 118.3 mg (1.18g) of tobacco.

(Note:- all above using 18mm filter)

iv) Thus a 50g pouch of tobacco will be sufficient for the production of 42.4 to 66.7  cigarettes depending on the size of cigarette paper used (assuming under scientific conditions i.e no waste, stalks, humidity or variation in production size). Production would be expected to vary in the region of 10% when production is not under scientific conditions.

70mm papers = 66.7 cigarettes

79mm papers = 56.8 cigarettes

100mm papers = 42.4 cigarettes

(Note:- the above figures are only relevant to the 3 sizes of cigarette papers specified. There are other cigarette papers available such as 1 ¼”, 2 ½”, Double-wide and King Size and specialised cigarette papers. King Size should not to be confused with Kingsize).

NOTE   Border Force do NOT issue any guidelines to Officers regarding how many cigarettes per 50g pouch. See here

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

they did say they had all types of machines.

I have seen a few people(none smokers) caught out by claiming they use a roll up machine and can't hand roll, only for the ukba to produce a machine for them to use.

Also saw one guy claim to smoke,he even had an open pack of baccy....................but no papers,so the ukba produced some, and you know the rest.

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

Sounds like another good reason not to roll! All that math I mean! As a tuber I have it easy...most tubing tobacco comes in tubs or pouches with big letters saying something like 'makes up to **** cigarettes' (depending on size of course).

The tubs I tend to smoke are 120grammes and it says it'll make 170 cigs. A tub of that size will last me 3-4 days...depending on how much of it my kids nick. I smoke 40-50 tubed a day on average (60+ if 'real' straights) so 170 is about right- i use concept tubes which are smaller than the normal kingsize though.

So if the officer asks 'how many' I just point to the words on the tub. If he asks 'how long does a tub last' he gets shown the page in my SOT with the tax labels from every tub I've smoked AND THE DATE I opened it.

Simples. He can't really argue with what is on the bloody packet itself.

Yes l know you said about the machines, l was referring to the different sizes of papers and empty tubes  (grin)

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

I've counted the number of King Size tubes from 50g pouch several times and 60/61 seems to be fairly constant.

I calculate usage over 6 months on this basis. 2kg = 40 pouches x 60 = 2,400 cigs. Over 180 days = 13 cigs per day.

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

My friend uses Super Kingsize tubes (100mm) and averages 48 per 50g pouch.

Those scientists that produced the BS ISO 15592 part 3 knew their stuff!

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

I looked on the ISO website, if I want to buy the BS ISO 15592-3 publication it would cost me £156

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

I just tell 'em that I'm not that anal that I count how many I roll.

Don't know, don't care as long as a 50g pouch can last a couple of days or 2 for 3 days. That's good enough for me and should be for them.

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

This appears to be based on using a machine - anyone have any figures for hand rolling?

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

each person rolls at different weights sizes,so just do a count next time you roll some, weigh about 5 or 10 then you get an idea of how many you get to a 50g pack.

Re: How many cigarettes per 50g pouch?

always very usefull to know just how many 'you yourself get to a pack' and are able to prove it if/when asked.

we get 64 using a concept machine and was given the oppertunity to demonstrate in front of 2 ukbf, they will probably use these figures now for future reference.
