All change at Dover!

Yep it's all changing. On the way in never saw a customs post or even a customs officer. Drove straight to the French police checkpoint who were not interested and waved us through.

Coming back through Dover there are loads of cameras and ANPR's. There is a new customs checkpoint where a lot of BF and police were standing around but didn't see them check anybody.

The worst part though is you can't swap lanes but the lanes take you out on different roads ie M2 or M20 so a tired old duffer like me can easily find oneself on the wrong road out of Dover.

Bought petrol at Auchan Dunkirk which equates to about £1-03p, diesel is even cheaper.

Stayed at Kyriad hotel near Dunkirk port. Wouldn't really recommend it. Got a decent bar and secure parking. Friendly staff and cheap but probably the smallest rooms in the area.

Otherwise nothing much to report.

Re: All change at Dover!

Could have done a day ret for £24 and 6 free bottles of wine but we decided to stay over in France so did Dov/Dunkirk but certainly much cheaper than Hull/Zee

Warrior tells me there are ''thousands'' of illegals camped outside Calais port again.

Re: All change at Dover!

And a me too post here.

No customs on the way out, not interested just waved us on.

We always go to Stop and Shop as it's so easy.  Plenty of parking, nice clean loos, brusque but efficient service.

We bought diesel at Auchan Calais at €1.179 per litre, so around £0.86 pence which is good value.  Auchan supermarket is very good in the sense of the range of goods, parking etc, although I don't think food is any cheaper than Tesco.  Some interesting wine bargains in the promotion area which is toward the other end to where the wine department is (going past the toilets toward the garden centre)

Illegals camp on Avenue Roger Salengro behind the caravan store looked a bit emptier, although we did not stop to chathttp://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png
Still see plenty wandering around the fields around the motorways.

Went to Calais Wine Store which had a decent selection of Lindemans, Rosemount etc at £2.99 a bottle for 6.  The Hardys Stamp VR has gone up to £2.79 a bottle although that's still half the price of Tesco, Sainsburys etc.

We noticed that the coffee from Starbucks is now dispensed by machine rather than by a barrista.  The first cup tasted okay to me, although on the return journey it tasted bitter.

Returning, noticed the new ANPR's on exit and lots of BF were standing at the entrance to the new shed on the left.

Not aware of the problems with the lanes.  We headed out through Dover and onto the M20.  The only comment I would make is the condition of the roads, worse still some sections of the M25.

We got the £24 fare, with £1.44 back from Quidco, and six bottles of Vive la Vie which I noticed on the receipt had a rrp of £28.74.

Re: All change at Dover!

We've shopped at Auchan Calais since last century http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png

As we use the tunnel it's really convenient and we know the products and layout.

Possibly go for a longer stay in July as it's our 50th and my 80th.

Is it really 50 years since we sailed on Lord Warden from Folkestone to Boulogne on honeymoon

Re: All change at Dover!

We always visit Auchan but the one at Dunkirk. To be honest I tend to avoid Calais like the plague, read too many horror stories elsewhere about cars being broken into and then it's a draughty ride home. Having said that we are all guided by our own experience.

Your point about the state of the roads-not only that but the Dartford crossing is now horrendous. No queues for the first time ever as we approached then the barriers stayed down for about 5 minutes. Through the barriers and then you've umpteen lanes converging into 2. Same the other end of the tunnel, then everybody had to do emergency stops when a car got hooked broadside on to the front bumper of an artic. The standard of driving was atrocious all the way back to the midlands. The M40 is a much better drive but further by 20 miles.

Re: All change at Dover!

Article here from the Daily Telegraph suggesting that overseas shopping is becoming more popular with the improved exchange rate.

This is the current layout when exiting Dover (if it works)
